Statement from state Rep. John Chirkun (D-Roseville) on a doctor refusing to treat the infant daughter of a lesbian couple:

Thursday, February 19, 2015

“I am disappointed that Jami and Krista Contreras, were turned away by the pediatrician they had chosen for their daughter, Bay, last fall because they are a lesbian couple. Sadly, what this doctor did is legal in Michigan. Their experience is yet another example of why we need to extend our civil rights laws to cover LGBT Michiganders so that this kind of discrimination stops. I am glad that the Contreras’ have found a pediatrician for Bay that they are happy with, but they never should have been put in this situation to begin with. This kind of discrimination hurts families and children, and it has no place in our state.”
